A trip to the 70s and 80s, at a time when people flocked there every weekend from Bayonne, Cambo and even Saint-Palais. Crazy years punctuated by frenzied summers. “The era of slows, too”, mark the entry of the two Jean-Marcs.

Nostalgic among others for those “good old days”, very young retirees came there from Bayonne. First time in 1985. “We also went to Dandy (Bidart) and Makila (Urrugne). But when we went to La Tupiña, we were sure there would be a lot of people. It was THE reference, really the box where everyone came…” “It’s all a long way off, but we haven’t forgotten it, they continue. And then today it comes back to life. This is good news for young people! »

When we came to La Tupina, we were sure there would be a lot of people. It was really THE reference, really the club where everyone came…

The Martinez family inaugurated this Friday, June 10, its Peña, a new restaurant and party venue north of Saint-Jean-de-Luz. This restaurant designed in the image of a Spanish hacienda, with permission to close late (4 a.m.), invites itself into the completely renovated walls of the former nightclub La Tupiña, also known as Sunset or Tup ‘Kassav.

Young before the eternal, Bob, 61, is even more touched to have a drink there again. 80s too; “known married and unmarried,” he smiles. “What to tell you? That La Tupiña was La Tupiña, a very, very good club, in which we had some memorable parties. It came from everywhere, but everyone knew each other. Really a great atmosphere”, he offers, noting that it is to him that we owe the conservation of the only vestige of the time, a pillar-counter on which three young Luziennes are precisely leaning.

It came from everywhere, but everyone knew each other. Really great atmosphere!

“It’s the souvenir pillar of the first galoshes, isn’t it? “Chamber Maylis, Elisa and Alaia. The trio say they heard about La Tupina from their mothers and grandmothers. “We were told that it was a very famous nightclub, and we are very happy that it is reopening because we have never known it to be open and above all because it is a new place to party until ‘at 4 o’clock,’ they deliver, not convinced by La Taverne de Nesle and chilled by the road to join La Licorne. “Since I live in Acotz, it’s perfect! “extends Maylis.

“A mythical place”

Looking back with Vincent, a witness to the mid-1970s. “It was an almost mythical place, really apart. We tumbled on mopeds, we went to the Acotz campsites, and then we came there. I came from Mourenx. It was really the meeting point and, in the summer, it was something. But beware, it had nothing to do with it, it was the pampas here, ”he serves from the new exterior.

Jean-Pierre is just as playful, but more concise. “I remember that we came there, but I don’t remember anything,” he laughs. Le Luzien reviews more seriously “the tours, with the Ferry Boat” and “also the snack bar next door, open until 6 am”. “We took thirty years in the face, but given the quality of the work they have done, it makes you want to come back,” he approves.

Passage in the early 90s by the voice of Brigitte and David, married a few years after serving here, she in reception and he in security. “It was known and recognized, and there weren’t too many fights. Afterwards, we switched to Gelosia 2000, that was also something”, expands the mother of the family. “It was the time of Eric Aubin and Christian Pécastaing. In the summer it was very hot. And there were beautiful people, especially rugby internationals, ”refocuses her spouse.

Time detour via the Sunset and return to “La Tup” (pronounced “la toup”) around a quadra table. “We knew it with, depending on the weather, one or two rooms and with competition from Mata-Hari (ex-Paseo) in Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Paradis bleu and La Licorne in Bidart. “says Sébastien.

“First time in a box” for Benoit, in 1990. “I was 14 but I had big brothers”, he likes to tell. “Since it burned down (September 8, 2010, Ed), there was nothing left in Saint-Jean-de-Luz. A place like that was missing,” they agree.
