Disappeared while accompanying his family on a campsite, a cat wandered alone in the wild for about fifty days. Coming from afar, its owners were assisted by 2 residents who scoured the area in search of the feline.

Gustopher the cat returned home safe and sound, nearly 2 months after disappearing in the middle of the wilderness, reported Rocky Mountain Outlook today.

6 years old, Gustopher was adopted by Jody Huday and his son Dolphis Seguin when he was 2 and a half years old. He then lived in a crisis center not far from their home Winnipegin Manitoba (Canada), after being rescued as a stray cat.

On August 31, he accompanied his people to the campsite Spray Lakes Weston the edge of the dam lake Spray Lakes Reservoir. It was during that night that he disappeared. Jody and Delphi hadn’t noticed until they woke up the next morning. However, the cat had its harness, was attached to the leash and slept in their sleeping bag. He had managed to free himself to venture outside before he got lost.

The duo stayed there for 4 more days to look for him, but Gustopher remained untraceable. 2 local residents, Lisa Young and Diane Borland Friendsoffered to help as soon as they learned what had happened.

Cameras and a trap cage installed

They installed cameras in the area after getting the go-ahead from the authorities and then spent days and nights scrutinizing their screens. Tuesday 18 October at Lisa Young detected motion on its screen. It was indeed a cat. However, she could not yet confirm that Gustopher.

Diane Borland Friends and her husband immediately placed a trap-cage in the place indicated. Finally, Friday 21 October at Gustopher stuck there. His rescuers quickly went to get him and then called Jody to tell him the news.

Moved and relieved, she resumed the long journey of almost 1,500 kilometers to find her cat and bring it home.

Gustopher survived alone for 54 days when he could have been attacked by a coyote, a wolf or even a bear. He came back unscathed, just thinner.
