A second chance for a stray dog trying to survive with a collar stuck around his neck

In Canada, a stray dog suffering from an infected wound caused by her collar has been found and taken care of, reports I Heart Radio.

It all started in February 2023. The association Manitoba Animal Alliance was then conducting a sterilization and vaccination campaign near Little Grand Rapids, Manitoba, when its members had seen the dog in question.

Volunteers, residents and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police had mobilized to capture the German shepherd cross, but without success.

After several failed attempts and after noticing that it no longer reappeared, the team came off Manitoba Animal Alliance had” assumed she was dead “, according to the association’s director general Debra Vandekerkhove.

However, it had not really disappeared. The female dog, later called Sophie of its benefactors, actually reappeared in early May. She was discovered by a resident of Little Grand Rapids who photographed her and sent the picture to the association.

Sophie was in an isolated area. The only way to see it was to fly over the sector. The plane was the only way to reach the place in question.

Thanks to the financial support and the green light from Little Grand Rapids First Nation, local Native American communities, the theft may have taken place. 2 days later, Sophie was finally sure.

She was then transported to Winnipeg and admitted to a veterinary clinic. Vets managed to remove the collar, which was embedded in the skin on his neck and had caused a deep and infected wound. She was breathing very badly and was terribly sore because of this accessory.

“She’s getting better and better”

Debra Vandekerkhove believe the dog had a family when she was younger and either escaped or was left to keep her little collar that surrounded her as she grew.

The wound was cleaned, disinfected and sutured. Sophie will remain hospitalized until his condition is deemed sufficiently stable. She is not completely out of the woods yet, as it is unclear whether the infection has been overcome, but at Manitoba Animal Alliancewe try to keep hoping.

He will also have to learn to trust people again. Sophieis still a little hesitant around people, but she is getting better and better », ends Debra Vandekerkhove.
