Ariège: Mickey, 15, the star cat in Ax-les-Therme’s press office

David Fraysse, the head of a press office in Ax-les-Thermes in Ariège, recovered the cat from a resident who died a year ago. Mickey, 15, has become the star of the store. At nightfall, a volunteer from the local cat association picks it up.

Every day he sits on his pedestal at the entrance to the press office in the center of Ax-les-Thermes in Ariège. Often he is on a pile of newspapers, staring at new arrivals, like a very endearing security guard. Sometimes he has his eyes glued to the outside and he chats with children who notice him from the street or pets that pass in the driveway. Mickey, 15, has become owner David Fraysse’s mascot.

This cat has lived in the neighborhood since birth. “He has always made his life in the center of the city. He spent most of his time on the windowsill of his previous owner. Sometimes he went to sniff croquettes in the convenience store. And one day he is installed on a pile of leaves in our shop. He cleaned up, came back two hours later and resumed his place. Then the scene repeated itself the next day, for a week, a month… He is known to all the customers”, smiles the grocer.

In joint custody

His life changed when his owner died a year ago. “The question arose about his future. The family of the deceased was not there. It was therefore complicated to take care of him. Finally, solidarity was in place”, remembers David Fraysse, who, however, admits to not being particularly fond of cats. “But I felt tenderness towards him. That’s how I became “hatred”, he explains with a touch of self-mockery. And then it’s nicer than having to put him in the SPA.”

There was still one problem to solve: who would take care of it at night? “Because we don’t have a litter and cat litter for him to get in and out of the press office. So a volunteer from the Ax Cat Association offered to take him in at night. She comes and drops it off in the morning when it opens, at 7:30, and collects it up when it closes. It’s a kind of rotating custody,” jokes his other benefactor. . The association also takes care of his health and veterinary follow-up, so that the cat, chipped and tattooed, stays fit despite his old age.

“He is very sociable”

Coexistence with the retail customers is going well. “He is very sociable, can be petted… He has become a little favorite with children. Families ask for him when they don’t see him. In short, he is a real little attraction!” This Christmas season, here’s a beautiful story that brings back the beast’s hair…
