Created in December 2021, based in Montillot, near Vézelay, in Yonne, the voluntary animal protection association Cats and Co 89 opened a branch in the town of Flotteurs, on the 1st. eh July. She set up shop in the former Robert Buchez store located at the bottom of the rue du Petit-Marché. City property, it was made available free of charge as part of the establishment of an annual objective agreement with the aim of combating the spread of stray cats by practicing their sterilization. A decision adopted by the municipal council on Tuesday 21 May, as well as the granting of a grant of € 2,500.
Open three days a week
After work carried out by technical service staff and volunteers, the premises, called Cats & Coffee, are now operational. It is open three days a week, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 9.30 to 12.00 and 14.00 to 17.00. On offer are coffee, tea, fruit juice, sale at low prices of used items from donations (clothing, shoes, toys, etc.) as well as new high-end clothing donated by a store in Vézelay, and items for purchase with the image of cats bought or made of members of the association. Once an airlock has been installed, one or two cats will be present during business hours, as in popular cat bars, especially in Japan. Since January, the association has taken care of one hundred and fourteen cats and kittens, forty-three of them in Clamecy.
Then capture sterilization
She performed a first sterilization operation after capture by capturing in the swimming pool, Vanne-du-Gour (Auchan), rue de Druyes and rue des Récollets. Sterilizations are carried out at the local veterinary practice with which a partnership has been established (prices are lower than those applicable to individuals, the same as for fostering and for families adopting kittens). Among the collected cats, 35 adults are currently in the association’s cattery in Montillot, many are sick.
Last year, the association, which has around ten volunteers, including three in Montillot, dedicated €36,000 to the care and food of the rescued felines.
In addition to the grant from the town of Clamecy, she received one from Montillot (€150) and another from Lucy-sur-Yonne (€300) for thirty cats. She therefore appeals to people of good will, “up in arms” to provide support. She is overwhelmed by calls, an average of two a day, to welcome cats or kittens. The latter are placed in foster families, but here too the number is insufficient.
For older cat owners, the association offers a Senior Contract, which stipulates that if something happens (hospitalization, death), the association restores the animal temporarily or permanently.
