Cheaper, greener, the Nous anti-gaspi chain opens its first store in Bordeaux

For several weeks, passers-by in the rue Sainte-Colombe at Bordeaux wonder when they see the faded storefront of a long-vacant commercial premises recently repainted in bright yellow. And inside, it activates.

A new trade go open ? Yes but what kind? We anti-waste is a chain of anti-waste grocery stores born in Brittany in 2018, which is preparing the opening on August 24, 2022 of its 25e store in France. The first in New Aquitaine, and more widely in the whole of the south of France.

Take action against food waste

The concept is simple: sell products (fruits and vegetables, yogurts, cheese or meat, groceries and hygiene items, alcohol, bulk) that mass distribution no longer wants and prevent them from ending up in the trash. A yogurt with a short date, pasta with a slightly outdated date, ugly or poorly calibrated fruits and vegetables, end of series, etc.

It must be said that there is plenty to do! According to a study carried out by Ademe in 2020, nearly 10 million tonnes of edible food are wasted each year in France, the equivalent of 150 kg per inhabitant.

The brand therefore works with buyers, who work with 900 food distribution partners. For example, if a pallet is refused by a supermarket because the delivery did not respect the time slot, Nous anti-gaspi offers to buy the pallet back from the logistician at a lower cost.

Another example: “In the dry, manufacturers sometimes change their recipe. They have three or four pallets left to sell. Large retailers no longer want it, but we are interested, ”explains Arnaud Laroque, the boss of the store in Bordeaux, and former manager of the Melesse store, near Rennes.

15 to 25% savings

With this concept, the brand makes two promises to the customer: to do a good deed in favor of the environment and to save money on their shopping. Indeed, for the same reference, the products are sold 15 to 25% cheaper than in supermarkets.

“We have both types of customers. Those who come with an eco-responsible approach, and those who think about their purchasing power,” comments Arnaud Laroque.

On the other hand, to continue the comparison with traditional supermarkets, we do not find everything or all brands at Nous anti-gaspi. Arrivals are made according to opportunities. However, when he worked in Brittany, Arnaud Laroque ensures that customers managed to do their shopping for the week in his store.

“The only difference is that you don’t have to come with a set shopping list,” he warns. For example, if he put several olive oil references on the shelves for the opening, he only has one vinegar reference – “a hard-to-get product”. “We try to have at least one reference for each family of products”, continues the director of the grocery store, who is 110 m2 of commercial area.

It is possible to do your shopping

Also, Nous anti-gaspi buys products that were not intended for the trash, such as toilet paper or paper towels of course – which are not perishable – or even fruits and vegetables, in order to complete the stall according to arrivals from the anti-waste. “The customer must be able to find all the basic necessities”, justifies Arnaud Laroque.

“I like to tell customers that they have to come to us every day, because as we sell non-tracked products, we have different products every day”, smiles the director, in good salesmanship.

Schedule : Monday to Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
