Cotentin. Medical desertification: GPs poised to carry on during retirement

For a patient base of almost 170,000 people, 20,000 are without a doctor in the Cotentin. These figures were presented during the visit of the President of the Republic to the Pasteur Hospital in Cherbourg (Manche) on 31 May 2022.

On October 26, Emmanuel Macron’s guest on the TV show L’Event declared: “We will allow all doctors who are about to retire, to retire, but to continue their activity in parallel with accumulating full pension and salary without to pay pension contributions.

“A gold mine for us”

This is one of the solutions that have been found to handle medical desertification. If there are alternatives such as telemedicine or calling other health professionals for certain consultations and certain medical procedures, other avenues are welcome, such as this permission given to liberals who are about to retire. In 2020, according to the Observatoire de la Mutualité française, 51% of doctors practicing in Manche were 55 years and over.

Continued while he was retired, “this is a measure that we were waiting for and that had been put forward at the national conference of the URPS of liberal physicians”, specifies Antoine Leveneur, president of the URML in Normandy (Regional Union of Liberal Physicians) and who is leading this conference. “The observation is simple: We are leaving, and we have many pensioners, at a time when we already lack weapons. The employment of young pensioners is a gold mine for us. »

Give a hand

The management of Covid-19 has highlighted the availability of retired GPs to provide assistance. They will also be ready to intervene as reinforcements, assures Antoine Leveneur. “At least we’re going to lose them, but they’re willing to lend a hand.”

The condition is exemption from pension payments. This is at least one of the conditions that the profession puts on the table. “We wish there were more. Even if a retired doctor only wants to work 20% of a full-time equivalent, it will do us a favor, but it will be a waste of money for him…” explains Antoine Leveneur, who hopes that “the question will return” .

For retired GPs to accept, there is no question of them losing money. Then they will be able to continue working on their territory and provide reinforcement in the medical regulatory centers (next to Samu) or even in the service of access to care.
