The president of the National Center for University and School Work (Cnous), which notably manages university restaurants across France, announced this Sunday in an interview with Ouest-France that attendance at these restaurants has reached “unheard of” levels, while inflation worsens students’ uncertainty.
“We have reached a spectator rate that has never been seen in the history of Crous, explains Dominique Marchand to Ouest-France. Between last year and the start of this school, in the first two months there has been an increase in activity of 17%. This corresponds to 1 .5 million extra meals The meal costs 3.30 euros, in addition to a meal available for 1 euro for the most insecure (whose number of recipients has been multiplied by three).
Scholarships and non-scholarships
This increase in attendance is not without consequences: “It explains the long queues at the entrance to university restaurants,” she explains. “The number of scholarship holders who eat at our places has increased by 15%”, also states the president of Cnous. “But above all, there is a huge increase in the attendance of non-scholarship students. »
Student insecurity has increased in recent years with the Covid-19 crisis and rent increases, especially in the big cities, where it is no longer rare to see long queues of young people waiting to collect parcels. According to a study by the association COP1-Solidarités Étudiants, 56% of the students surveyed admitted that they generally did not have enough to eat.
