The US presidential election is fast approaching. Among the big issues in this election we find inflation. Also on the other side of the Atlantic, prices have been violent for four years. This is the case in the suburbs of San Antonio, Texas. In a parking lot surrounded by houses with wood planks eaten away by moths, the grass is yellow and the only trace of life is this line of cars waiting to get here.
This line stretches for more than a kilometer. The principle is simple: A car leaves the trunk open so volunteers can fill it with food. At the wheel, Denise, 74 years old. She is a teacher by day and a cashier in the evening. “I try to feed my family. There are seven of us at home. Food prices smoke in the air from the government. The aid we receive does not even cover the purchase of food,” she notes. “This inflation is endless. Can you see the line of people waiting? This should not be happening in the greatest nation in the world.”
Added to this is the increase in the price of petrol, bills, electricity, water, gas… On the spot, people cry while driving in their car while they get food delivered.

Three hours to provide a ton of food
This queue has only increased in recent months. “Today we have carrots, zucchini, cucumbers, slices of salami. These people struggle to eat. We started with a big queue, about 80 vehicles. We are now at 120 and it keeps coming,” says the manager of this distribution, Gonzalo.

The teams have three hours to provide more than a ton of food only for this distribution. “We get many mothers here who explain to us that they haven’t eaten for several days a man told us right in his car that he was thinking about killing himself. It is difficult. Biden and Trump took the piss out of us, that’s all I have to say,” rages Gonzalo. The man the manager was talking about, like many here, has accumulated credits to be able to buy food. Excessive indebtedness rose to 100,000 euros for himwhich means he is now on the streets.

Anna, for her part, has just lost her job. “It collapsed. I was HR and downsizing on Friday. And there I have no money coming in and rent to pay. $1,350 rent. It is a matter of life and death. I have two children. If you go out of your way, you do everything you can. I am told that I have to wait until November 6th to make an appointment to find out if I am eligible for government food assistance. My family will be here tomorrow, but they have no future. I don’t think it’s the American dream,’ confides the Texan.
