Interview. Mustard, vinaigrette, handkerchiefs… These products that are missing in your supermarkets

Difficult to escape it at checkout: the price of all everyday products soars. (© Illustration / Adobe Stock)

The products sold in supermarkets are hit hard by inflation, which has not taken a vacation and they are also, at times, rare.

Actu.fr takes stock of your shelves with the reference panelist on sales in supermarkets NielsenIQ . Interview.

News: Inflation puts a strain on consumers’ wallets. What do the latest NielsenIQ studies say about product pricing?

Myriam Qadi: Inflation continues to rise at the rate of an additional point every month. As a result, the first prices crossed the 10% mark (+10.5%). All of the manufacturer brands remain very strong (+5.8%) and in particular the biggest brands (+7.1%) outside the usual standards, as they are generally very competitive between the brands.
This is particularly the case for fresh products (+9.9%) where the 10% will probably be exceeded in September. Stand out among others ultra-fresh and butter which have increased by 1.6% in one month.
Also note, on the paper hygiene side, the majority of categories are up by more than 1% (baby diapers, tissues, paper, paper towels, toilet paper). The accompanying measures for the signs at the start of the school year will certainly attenuate some increases a little, but the movement will remain powerful in the months to come.

“Mustard remains the product experiencing the strongest breaks”

You also warn about shortages… Is finding a jar of mustard in the supermarket always an obstacle course?

QM: The mustard shortage has an explanation: French mustard comes largely from seeds from abroad. Some of these come from Russia and Ukraine and the current geopolitical situation makes their delivery difficult. On the other hand, of the 35,000 tonnes of seed needed each year, 80% is imported from Canada. But the country experienced a severe drought which had consequences on the harvests….
Since the start of the conflict in Ukraine, mustard has thus remained the product with the greatest shortages: 21% less availability!

What other products are currently “missing” on the shelves?

QM: Vinaigrette, product for fire (firelighter), cooking grease, sandwiches, still and sparkling water, soups, crisps, flavored water, surimis, oils, carbonated soft drinks, frozen poultry and paper towel.
We are not in a context of shortages, as for mustard (in July, almost 30% of stores had no mustard), but because of all the geopolitical elements, those related to the climate, we are less comfortable in the regularity of product availability in stores.

You have also noticed phenomena of “abnormal sales”, waves of compulsive purchases, is this still the case?

QM: A few months ago, we were in a pattern of anticipation purchases, today I would say that due to the very sporadic availability of jars of mustard, we could rather speak of a “reasoned” purchase when the consumer is lucky enough to find a jar of mustard.

The conflict in Ukraine and climatic events could create other shortages in the coming months. What products are affected?

QM: To date, we have no visibility on other possible shortages of the level of those observed on mustards. However, the climatic events of recent months could indeed cause difficulties or a slowdown in the production of certain products.
Starches, semolina, pasta, flour and rice have decreased in terms of availability in recent weeks without being at a critical level in terms of stock. On these cereal-based products, the situation has returned to normal. There have been precautionary purchases, including food banks.

Packaging suppliers are also faced with major production problems… What is the situation?

QM: In my opinion, the problem of packaging (cardboard/paper/aluminium/glass…) will continue to hinder the production of certain products, and the increase in the price of energy will not help matters either… and this is still, in my opinion, the reason why some manufacturers are moving towards alternative packaging solutions to plastic packaging based on renewable raw materials.
