Buyers of Apple’s latest iPhone are willing to put their hands in their wallets to access the most convenient storage options, a new study claims.
While the 2022 lineup has been on sale for a few weeks, early numbers show that those buying a new device are willing to pay more to avoid the base 128GB model, sometimes opting to go all the way up of 1 TB.
Customers always want more storage space
iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus are sold in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB configurations, while iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max also come in 1TB capacity. Figures shared by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) show that people are more easily attracted to high-capacity variants than in previous years, although the study notes that the same data was found by surveying buyers of iPhone 13 models Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max.
Consumers continued their long-standing trend of upgrading basic storage. For the new iPhone 14 models and the more expensive iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max, most customers paid a premium for phones with larger storage capacity.
Why pay more for your iPhone 14?
Why consumers are opting for more storage and skipping the base 128GB option is unclear, but there are a few possibilities.
The first is probably the most plausible, the lack makes the choice easier. Indeed, the 128GB models quickly sold out, perhaps due to Apple’s fault, which produces less, prompting customers to upgrade to higher options. The numbers could confirm that: 50% of people who bought an iPhone 14 Pro this year chose the 256 GB model.
Another possibility, especially with this year’s iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, is for customers to know the file sizes of photos and videos created by the new 48-megapixel sensors. A ProRAW image easily takes up 80MB, and a few minutes of 4K video quickly exceeds one gigabyte.
Finally, last guess, customers took a comfortable option to keep their phone for a while, without planning to upgrade to iPhone 15 Pro next year. The new features of the iPhone 14 Pro are numerous, with the Dynamic Island, the always-on screen, the improved autonomy, the 48 Mp camera or the A16 chip. Next year, Apple should limit the changes to a USB-C port, an A17 chip and probably a periscopic zoom.
PS : the new iPhone 14 Pro Max is currently on sale at -10%.
