Iran calls on US to show flexibility

Iran responded on Monday to the European Union’s “definitive” text, aimed at reviving the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, a European official said, after Iran’s foreign minister called on the United States to be flexible. The Islamic Republic is seeking guarantees that no future US president would renege on the deal if it were revived, as Donald Trump did in 2018.

Iran responded on Monday (August 15th) to the European Union’s “definitive” text, aimed at reviving the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, a European official said, after Iran’s foreign minister called on states United to be flexible.

The EU official did not give details of Tehran’s response. “There are three issues that arise, and if they are resolved, we can reach an agreement,” Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian said earlier today. “We don’t want to reach an agreement that after 40 days, two months or three months does not materialize on the ground… We told them that our limits must be respected,” said Hossein Amirabdollahian.

The United States said a return to the 2015 deal was possible if Iran dropped its “superfluous” demands.

More flexibility

Hossein Amirabdollahian believes that the days to come will be crucial. “We will need more talks if Washington does not show flexibility to resolve the remaining issues… Like Washington, we have our own plan B if the talks fail,” he said. The Islamic Republic is seeking guarantees that no future US president would renege on the deal if it were revived, as Donald Trump did in 2018.

The European Union, as the coordinator of nuclear talks between Iran and world powers, presented a “definitive” text last week aimed at reviving the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.
