Pets have become part of the family. For many people, dogs, cats, etc. are very important in their homes and in their lives. For this reason, many people wonder if it is good for a dog to sleep in their bed.
“Interaction with animals has been shown to reduce cortisol levels (a stress-related hormone) and lower blood pressure. Other studies have shown that pets can reduce loneliness, increase feelings of social support, and improve mood,” explain the American National Institutes of Health.
The Mayo Clinic, a nonprofit organization dedicated to clinical practice, education, and research, conducted a study titled “The effect of dogs on human sleep in the home sleep environment,” in which it sought to analyze whether a dog in the room or on the bed can disturb people’s sleep.
Is it healthy for a pet to sleep in your bed?
As part of this study, the research team assessed the sleep of 40 people (without sleep disturbances) and their dogs (none under 6 months old) who were in the same room at bedtime.
“Humans with only one dog in their bedroom maintained good sleep efficiency; however, the position of the dog in or out of the bed made a difference. The presence of a dog in the bedroom may not disturb human sleep as previously suspected,” concludes the study.
Sleep apnea is another cause of the body feeling tired every morning, despite having slept.
“This is a common disorder where breathing is interrupted or becomes very shallow. These interruptions can last from a few seconds to a few minutes and can occur more than 30 times per hour,” explains Medline Plus, the United States National Library of Medicine.
People who suffer from this disorder are not aware that they have it. According to Sanitas, a health organization, here are some symptoms that people people can identify to find out if they suffer from sleep apnea:
- Suddenly waking up with a snore or grunt.
- Waking up feeling unrested and waking up with a headache or dry mouth.
- During the day, drowsiness, signs of fatigue, loss of concentration or irritability.
Why is sleep important?
When people sleep, the brain goes through five different sleep phases. Each of them helps the body feel more rested and energized to perform optimally the next day. In the words of Medline Plus, the website of the US National Library of Medicine, here are the benefits stages of sleep:
- Feel rested and energized the next day.
- Learning information, making reflections and forming memories.
- Rest the heart and vascular system.
- Release more growth hormone, which helps children grow. It also increases muscle mass and cell and tissue repair in children and adults.
- Release hormones, which contribute to puberty and fertility.
- Prevent getting sick and get better when you are sick by creating more cytokines (hormones that help the immune system fight various infections).
