Lawyers for Julian Assange await trial against the CIA, which they accuse of spying

Will he be able to prevent his extradition to the United States? This is the pending question in the Assange case, as the whistleblower behind Wikileaks awaits trial at the CIA, the US foreign intelligence agency. Julian Assange’s lawyers notably accuse the agency of having spied on the Australian’s interlocutors when he was a refugee in the Ecuadorian embassy in London, by making copies of their personal data and recording conversations.

A complaint was filed in New York court on Monday by lawyers Margaret Ratner Kunstler and Deborah Hrbek, and journalists Charles Glass and John Goetz, all of whom visited Mr Assange when he was in London. According to the elements of the complaint file cited by the Guardian, Julian Assange claims that the CIA collaborated with Undercover Global, a security company hired by the Ecuadorian embassy in London to spy on the founder of WikiLeaks, his lawyers, journalists and other people he met. The complaint is based on the violation of the American constitution which guarantees the confidentiality of this type of exchange.

Right to a fair trial

Julian Assange’s lawyers claim that the charges against the US Agency are likely to jeopardize the extradition procedure for the world’s most famous whistleblower. Robert Boyle, a New York lawyer representing the plaintiffs, said the alleged spying on Assange’s lawyers means the WikiLeaks founder’s right to a fair trial is “now tainted, if not destroyed”. “There should be sanctions, going as far as the abandonment of these charges or the withdrawal of an extradition request”, further affirms the lawyer.

Julian Assange, who appealed the extradition decision in England, is awaiting judgment. In the United States, he faces up to 175 years in prison.
