Like humans, dogs would be able to cry for joy

Dogs have developed amazing abilities to adapt to humans, and this recent study is proof of that. According to the results, the doggies would shed tears when they found their owner after a long absence. This would make them the only animals capable of crying for joy.

What if dogs showed their joy the same way humans do? This is what the Japanese researcher Takefumi Kikusui tried to demonstrate. Inspired by his personal story, this professor conducted a study with other experimenters. This, published in the scientific journal Current Biologydemonstrated that dogs can cry for joy.

It all started when the female Poodle of Takefumi Kikusui became pregnant, reported The Guardian. The dog’s face seemed more loving as she nursed her little ones. The teacher then became interested in how dogs could physically express their joy.

“The Hormone of Social Connection”

Oxytocin, sometimes called the love hormone, is involved in interpersonal relationships in humans. But dogs can also secrete it when they feel a positive emotion, especially in contact with their master after several hours of separation. To demonstrate this hypothesis, the research team formed 2 groups of dogs, all separated from their owners for 5 hours.

Specific strips were installed inside their eyelids to collect tears. The tabs were analyzed while the dogs were left alone. No significant amount of tears was observed. Then the groups were placed in humans after a 5-hour delay. The first joined famous people, while in the second the animals found their owners. Dom, the latter shed the most tears at the time of the meeting!

Dogs with human behavior

According to these findings, dogs would cry for joy when they found their master after a certain time: ” This is the first report showing that positive emotions stimulate tear secretion in a non-human animal and that oxytocin acts in tear secretion claimed Takefumi Kikusui.

The man and his teammates also demonstrated that the dogs’ faces could change to evoke emotions in their interlocutor. Among other things, they are able to raise their eyebrows to soften the human. The goal is to get attention or food.

Experts still need to clarify the social function of dog tears “, observing especially whether they use them among themselves: ” We do not yet know whether dogs produce more tears during a dog encounter. We also don’t know how dogs use tears to communicate with each other. “.
