Might as well stop F1 if long races are a problem

Max Verstappen’s 2022 season will have been much less intense than the previous campaign, which saw the Dutchman win his second world title in dominant fashion four races before the end of the year. Last year, on the contrary, it was only on the last lap of the last Grand Prix that the crowning was decided, in controversy, against Lewis Hamilton, again in a calendar that had 22 events.

After acquiring the 2021 title, Verstappen told The Guardian: “You can’t have that kind of drama every year, that’s for sure. It’s not good for me, it’s not healthy for anybody on the team, on either team.”

But with the prospect of a 24 GP calendar looming next year, the now two-time Champion knows there is a high risk of seeing tense situations drag on. But when asked what may await him in the future in terms of imposed restrictions and stress, he confirms that he is not worried, nor does he need to prepare specifically.

“If you’re not prepared, you’d better quit, right? I think we’re all competitors and we love to race. Of course, it’s just that it’s good to go. To have a season like last year, but it is as good to have a season as this year It would be very difficult to live [une saison comme 2021] every year, as was the case last year. But that doesn’t really happen in Formula 1 either, so it should be fine.’

Verstappen’s closest rival Charles Leclerc admitted there was no choice but to be prepared for longer and more intense seasons. “I think we are all ready for longer seasons. I hope it will be close. It is always nice to fight to the end. But yes, I am ready for more races and for a longer fight, hopefully I.”

While Red Bull have dominated this year, mastering the weight handicap of their RB18, Verstappen does not think it is certain that their advantage over the opposition will continue in 2023. “I think it will get tighter. People understand the cars better and better and in time all the teams will come together.”

“We know that during the winter we will have to keep pushing and trying to find performance and not only: maybe understand the tires even better, because the tires will change a little bit for next year. So yes, we Let’s see how we handle it all.”
