My cat sleeps constantly, when should I be worried?

How long does a cat normally sleep?

The number of hours your cat needs to sleep and your cat’s typical sleeping pattern will change as he ages:

  • Kittens will probably sleep most of the day, with a few short bursts of energy between meals.
  • teenage girl cats can have erratic sleeping patterns combined with periods of intense play.
  • Adult cats tend to have more fixed sleep schedules that average between 12 and 20 hours of sleep per day.
  • Senior cats will tend to have less energy and reduced mobility, which means they will sleep more than younger cats.

You will likely find that once your cat reaches adulthood, it will begin to form a recognizable pattern of sleep and wakefulness. For example, you might notice your cat waking up just before you do in the morning, enjoying an hour or two to eat and socialize with you, then go back to sleep while you continue your busy day.

Does my cat really sleep?

Cats sleep soundly but not always. Just like people, cats are often just dozing. Light sleep accounts for about 3/4 of your cat’s sleep time, with only 1/4 of her sleep time spent in deep sleep.

When cats sleep lightly, they get the rest they need, but they are still alert. When your cat is sleeping or napping, you may notice her eyes sticking slightly open or her ears twitching and always turning to noises.

When should I be worried?

There is no set sleep duration to indicate a health problem or health emergency, rather it is a matter of knowing your cat’s normal sleep patterns and recognizing when those patterns change significantly.

If your cat is starting to sleep a lot more or a lot less than usual, there may be a health issue, it’s time to consult your veterinarian.

Cats that start sleeping more than usual could be sick or in pain. On the other hand, if your cat starts sleeping less than usual, he may be suffering from hyperthyroidism or other conditions.
