Just over 90 affordable housing units are being built in the MIL campus area of the Université de Montréal in Outremont. The multigenerational housing project, executed at a cost of $24.5 million, will welcome its first residents before the end of 2023.
Work on the Coop MIL project, which will provide 91 affordable homes for families, singles and low- and middle-income seniors, is nearing completion.
The building, built on Querbes Avenue, will have 20 three- or four-bedroom units, 27 two-bedroom units and 44 one-bedroom units. The first tenants will be able to move in at the end of next year or at the latest at the beginning of 2024.
“We are building a neighborhood with a university vocation, at the forefront of sustainable development, a neighborhood too, and that is very important, citizen. A meeting place, a place for life, a place for social diversity”, delighted the Rector of the University of Montreal, Daniel Yesterday, Friday during a press conference.
He was notably accompanied by Rachel Bendayan, the Liberal MP for Outremont and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Tourism and Associate Minister of Finance, Ahmed Hussen.

Ottawa is funding $4.7 million of the project’s total budget, to which must be added $11.4 million from the Société d’habitation du Québec (SQH), through the AccèsLogis Montréal program, and $8.4 million from the City of Montreal, of which 3.4 million is supported by the Metropolitan Community of Montreal.
Up to 50% of tenants could benefit from SHQ’s Rent Supplement Programme, which would allow them to pay just 25% of their income towards housing.
The University of Montreal (UdeM) had sold part of its land to build rental housing there, on the condition that 30% of the housing was affordable.
Inaugurated in 2019, the MIL campus has been singled out for its role in the gentrification of the surrounding neighborhoods, particularly the Parc-Extension.
