People followed the sound of kittens to a tree stump and discovered three little ones inside just in time.

On a cold and rainy day last month, a property manager at an apartment complex heard faint cries and decided to investigate.

They traced the sound to a hollow tree stump that was filling up with rainwater and discovered three freezing kittens huddled inside. The manager immediately took them out and called Animal Care for help.

Officer Harper responded to the urgent request and arrived at the complex shortly thereafter.

With the kittens secured, she rushed them to the FieldHaven Feline Center to give them the care they needed.

The trio was alert and active, their cries a hopeful sign that they would make it. When they were only five weeks old, they were underweight and starving. “Who knew when their last meal was,” FieldHaven Feline Center shared with Love Meow.

“We had to carefully warm them up before we fed them, so we got down to business straight away.”

They worked tirelessly for hours to bring their temperatures back to normal, clean them and remove all those pesky fleas. After feeding the kittens, they placed them in a warm, cozy place to rest.

“One of the tiny tabbies was sitting in the paper tray, also commonly used as a fresh fry bowl, with his brother on top of him. It was at this time that we called them Hamburger (the biggest one with spots of black), Side of Fries (the smallest in the food tray) and Malt (the tabby sister).”

Keely, a volunteer, took the trio home to foster and was quickly charmed by their lovable personalities.

“They just wanted to snuggle and rest. They were very sweet and loved attention, especially head rubs and ear rubs,” Keely shared with Love Meow.

The kittens arrived with ravenous appetites, determined to grow big and strong. “They were very eager to learn how to eat. They would get so messy when they ate and spend a lot of time standing in the food.”

The kittens often get food all over their paws, but they don’t mind being cleaned up. To Keely’s surprise, they relax in warm baths and enjoy the extra attention.

At mealtime, the trio follows their foster mother like ducklings in tow. “They know who feeds them.”

“They are very playful and enjoy the company of our resident cats. They love to cuddle and be close to each other. When they sleep they are always together. I would be the happiest foster mom if they were all adopted together when they first is big enough.”

Malt and Side of Fries are the cattiest of the bunch. If they want something, they make their voices heard.

“They’ll tell you with their persistent and strong meow. Hamburger, on the other hand, is a little more soft-spoken and a little less demanding. Hamburger has a quiet, squeaky, and very polite meow.”

The kittens are enjoying their newfound freedom to explore beyond their playpen. They confidently play with the resident cats and zoom around like they own the place.

“They run and play with little spring toys and sparkly balls. They also like this stuffed fish toy that’s bigger than them.”

A few weeks ago these kittens were found in a tree trunk clinging to each other for dear life. Now they thrive in a loving foster home with limitless food, lots of toys and the warm company of their human and feline friends.
