Renewed tension in Corsica before the visit of Eric Dupond-Moretti, Minister of Justice and former lawyer for Yvan Colonna

The demonstration was organized six months after the death of Yvan Colonna, the assassin of the prefect Erignac killed by a fellow prisoner in Arles prison. About 150 people gathered at the call of the youth movement of the independence party Corsica Libera to demand the recognition of the Corsican people, the release of political prisoners and “justice for Yvan Colonna”.

During the evening, clashes between a handful of demonstrators and the police took place. As 20 Minutes indicates, after a calm start to the demonstration, the tension rose, with molotov cocktails fired at the police and responded with tear gas. A French flag was burned and a banner “statu francese assassinu” (“French state assassin” in Corsica) was deployed on the gates of the prefecture.

The Bastia prosecutor’s office clarified that there had been no arrests.

It is in this context that comes to the island, this Thursday, the Keeper of the Seals, Eric Dupond-Moretti, who was also Yvan Colonna’s lawyer. He will be in Ajaccio this Thursday and in Bastia on Friday. This is the first visit of the Minister of Justice to Corsica since he took office.

Since the death of Yvan Colonna, the government has engaged in discussions with the Corsicans, the Minister of the Interior had also stressed that there would be “no taboo” around exchanges on the desire for autonomy. He had however recalled some limits including a Corsica which remains “in the Republic” and where there must not be “two types of citizens”.

For Core in Fronte, this trip represents “an umpteenth provocation, of a government policy, which has only condescension and disrepute for Corsica”, wrote the independence party in an open letter.

Murder. Jean François Serveto, the only survivor of the Silvareccio massacre which killed three people in July 2013 and several times the target of attempted murder, was killed Thursday evening at his home in Poghju Mezana village. He was fatally hit by a large caliber shot just as he was closing his shutters specifies Corse Matin.
