RTL SURVEY – Faced with inflation, pawnshops exploded in 2022

A real boom in 2022 and a trend that speaks volumesthe difficulties encountered by the French in recent months. Applications for mortgage loans have increased dramatically in France over the past twelve months.

As a reminder, a pawnbroker is an emergency loan granted to you against the deposit of a valuable object: for example, a piece of jewelry, clothes or a painting.

To request it, you must go to a municipal credit. The establishment offers you a loan of money according to its value. If you repay on time, the item will be returned to you. Otherwise, you are no longer the owner. The numbers speak for themselves, +23% loans in Rennes, +18% in Angers, same trend in Reims, +10% in Toulon, Saint-Étienne, Bordeaux, Agen, Strasbourg, Mulhouse, +8% loans in Nantes or Tours .

Mortgage loans sometimes to pay off your car in full

Another phenomenon is that new customers use this system. And the main reason given by customers is of course inflation and the high cost of living. As explained to RTL Mélanie Savelli, deputy director of Crédit Municipal de Nantes, where 90% of the objects deposited are jewels. “Several people have explained that to usthey had electricity bills to pay and they had to pawn jewelleryor anything else to cover these expenses”

Loans to pay energy bills, but not only. “We see customers coming to drop off with us to fill their vehicle with gas. Over the past few months, that is evident“, explains Isabelle Desseaux, the director of the municipal credit in Reims, to RTL. And for this, customers deposit collections of stamps, musical instruments, bicycles or even mobile phones… Anything that may have value.

Customers are not exclusively people in difficulty. All profiles intersect in municipal credits : pensioners, retirees, entrepreneurs, traders, doctors, etc.

And with good reason, 2020 and 2021 were years characterized by Covid-19. Although we couldn’t do much, some started projects that they had put on hold. “We see our users coming back to life, we’ve seen them travel, work in their homes,” continues Isabelle Deseaux. The pawnbroker is therefore a means of survival, but also a means of realizing his projects.
