Every summer, it is the fear of animal protection associations: many do not hesitate to give up their faithful four-legged companion. This year, the disturbing phenomenon is significantly increasing compared to last summer, according to Cécilia Fruleux, director of the association Au Service des Animaux 06. At the head of Refuge de Mougins, an animal pound for 20 municipalities in the department, she draws, among other things, alarm clock.
How many abandoned dogs this summer?
I’ve averaged two disconnect requests a day since June, or about sixty a month! People call or write to us to ask us to pick up their animals.
What are the reasons for this choice?
Some say that they no longer have enough time to take him out, that they have an allergy, that the vet for their old dog is expensive… Their attachment is weak. They want to get rid of their limitations! They took these animals without thinking about the consequences…This is especially true of large dogs, even young ones. The striking thing is that the word abandonment is never uttered… But putting him in a shelter also means abandoning him.
What future for these unwanted dogs?
I have so many requests that I cannot accommodate them with only 36 boxes. Especially since in the summer there are very few adoptions, and therefore turnover. I am referring to other associations. Or I ask them to keep their pet until I find it a new family. But people don’t want to: they want to drop him off at the shelter and leave.
What about abandonment on public roads?
There were a lot of them this summer: more than twenty. Examples: Bobby, a mix found wandering in Vallauris, Benji, an 11-year-old Labrador cross abandoned in Mandelieu. Or Scott found passed out in a bush in Cagnes-sur-Mer. After the legal deadline of ten days, they are up for adoption at the Crisis Centre. A few days ago we found a litter of three Malinois puppies in a public garden in Cagnes: they were not ten days old! They are placed in a foster family to receive a bottle.
Some owners use deficits to abandon their animals…
A lady came to the shelter to leave her dog with me, I refused. She went to a veterinary clinic and pretended she had just found it! I was called by the clinic to pick him up and ran into the owner… I ended up taking her dog to the shelter which has been at our expense for a year…
Is there a cost to leaving the shelter?
We ask €150 if the dog is sterilized, identified, vaccinated. If this is not the case, it is €300 for a male, €350 for a female.
But people won’t pay. One day a lady came to the shelter to leave her dog. She pretended to withdraw money for the fees and left it a few meters from the entrance!
How to change the situation?
You should find out your needs before adopting an animal.
A dog needs at least three hours of interaction a day with its owner.
For food for a large dog it costs €100 per month, €45 for a small dog.
Another requirement is that they must be sterilized.
There is an act of irresponsible consumption in buying or adopting an animal that bothers me.
“Correias never left the female dogs”
Outraged by the deluge of slander that fell via social networks on the grieving influencers Laurent and Jazz Correia, Cécilia Fruleux restores the truth. On August 4, they got the two Dobermans belonging to Laurent’s father, who committed suicide in his home the same day, was found wandering in Saint-Jeannet.
“The Correias never left the dogs. Long before they ran away, Laurent Correia had contacted me because his father’s Dobermans were difficult to handle. They had already run away several times. Moreover, they were recovering in Vence. Today they are placed in a What shocked me was that the gendarmerie summoned the famous couple and deployed funds that were never implemented for anonymous people who have never been sanctioned.
