The ras-le-bol of the lawyers of the State of Congo-Brazzaville is the consequence of a bitter observation: all their requests for audiences with the Minister of Finance have remained dead letters.
In a statement read to the press by the coordinator of the Collective of Unpaid Lawyers, the President of the Bar Me Jean-Prosper Mabassi declares “ the suspension of participation in hearings before courts and tribunals throughout the national territory (…) until the global and final settlement of our unpaid fees “. The lawyers did not specify the amount of the unpaid.
Denis Sassou-Nguesso called to engage in litigation
” Said suspension will result, on the one hand, in the physical absence of State lawyers from said hearings, as well as the systematic dismissal, sine die, of cases in which the State is a party to the proceedings as plaintiff, defender or voluntary intervener, and on the other hand, the non-exercise by them of the remedies already rendered or which will be rendered during this period of suspension “, adds Me Mabassi.
Lawyers also criticize the government for giving priority to paying their colleagues, from foreign bars, who deal with Congolese State litigation abroad.
A copy of the statement has been sent to the highest authorities, which have not yet reacted to the claims. The lawyers now call the head of state, Denis Sassou-Nguessoto get involved to resolve this situation.
