Such is life | A quarter of the French say they are ready to go vegan (at least for a month)

While the “veganuare”, this challenge which consists of stopping consuming animal products in January, is coming to an end, a survey reveals that 26% of the French would be ready to go vegan, at least for a month . This lifestyle seems to attract more and more people as they were only 12% in 2019.

A study by the delivery service Deliveroo, carried out with the YouGov polling institute, reveals that more than a quarter of the French (26%) say they are ready to test veganism for a month. This way of consumption, which consists in removing all products of animal origin from one’s diet, is more attractive to younger generations. 40% of 18-24 year olds say they are ready, as do 36% of 25-34 year olds.

51% of respondents would be ready to become vegan to protect wildlife and 41% for environmental reasons. In addition to the protection of wildlife or the environment, health is also an important factor for 19% of respondents. But some are still convinced that a vegan diet can be harmful and can lead to other health problems. In fact, 28% of respondents said that this diet slows them down because it causes nutritional deficiencies.

For four years now, the home delivery service Deliveroo has developed a survey to take stock of the evolution of veganism in France. In 2019, 28% of respondents criticized the vegan diet for being too restrictive and lacking variety. Over the years, the survey gradually shows a change in mentality. 53% of French respondents in 2022 have already tried plant-based alternatives and liked them, for example. 38% have ordered a vegan dish in recent months on Deliveroo, whose supply of vegan restaurants has increased by 28% between 2021 and 2022.

Still, “vegan” orders made up just 1% of the brand’s total shipments last year; a stable figure compared to 2021.

*Deliveroo survey conducted in partnership with the YouGov pollster in December 2022 among 1,030 people aged 18 and over.
