The ranking of insurance companies in the life insurance market

Which players manage the largest life insurance portfolio? Discover the top 10 of the largest insurance companies.

L’ life insurance always appeals to savers. Whether it is for the fund’s capital guarantee in euros, or for the prospect of more attractive returns via the riskier investment in units of account (UA). According to statistics from France Assureurs compiled at the end of 2021, the life insurance market is dominated by “bancassurance companies”. The latter shares the 1,804 billion euros that life insurance represents with traditional insurers and mutuals. Here is the list of players who manage a good part of the household’s savings.

Crédit Agricole Assurances, CNP and BNP Paribas Cardif in the lead

In this ranking, the biggest sellers of life insurance are undoubtedly the big banking networks. And as proof, Crédit Agricole Assurances is at the top of the ranking with 276.41 billion euros in deposits in life insurance and capitalization contracts. The group brings together two separate entities: Predica (Crédit Agricole, LCL) and Spirica, which manages the contracts for several online savings platforms such as Meilleurtaux Placement with the Meilleurtaux Liberté Vie contract, as well as asset management consulting networks.

If last year CNP was in first place ahead of the Crédit Agricole group, this year the company has lost one place. By the end of 2021, it managed 270 billion euros. The vast majority of savings managed by CNP Assurances come from the banking networks La Banque Postale and Caisse d’Epargne, but also from CNP Patrimoine, its private management structure.

In the last place on the podium is the subsidiary of the BNP Paribas group: BNP Paribas Cardif. With 146 billion euros in deposits, BNP Paribas Cardif manages on the one hand its parent company’s banking products, in particular the Multiplacements 2 contract, but also the contracts offered by expert advisors in wealth management.

Then we find in order: Crédit Mutuel (145.7 billion euros), then Axa France Assurance (144.6 billion euros), Société Générale (117 billion euros) and Aéma (105.66 billion euros). With 96 billion euros, Generali loses one place and becomes eighth. The insurance company is followed by BPCE with 80.3 billion euros, and finally AG2R La Mondiale brings the rear of this top 10 with 78 billion euros.
