Carrot puree. Fried eggs. Broccoli and a Strasbourg sausage. Here are some simple food ideas to cook for a child. Yet, the notion of nutrition and balance does not seem to be acquired by all. On TikTok lately, the time is more for fat, grease, oil and also a little bit of (fake) butter. Excuse me the Bretons.
For several months, the clash of parents launched on social networks. Between the Americans who, true to themselves, offer increasingly fatter and sweeter dishes to their children, and the Europeans, who are the first to react, downright shocked that the children are still alive, the debate is lively.
This American woman is creating buzz by filming the meals she makes for the children she cares for
With its 680,000 subscribers, this daycare gets a lot of attention. In one of her latest videos, she films herself cooking frozen meatballs… with an entire tube of barbecue sauce, which she tries to drain as much as possible.
In it we also see her making garlic (and fatty) brioche buns, friesand finally small strawberries for the vegetable portion of the meal… Because hey, you don’t have to rummage around no. Unsurprisingly, the comments below are wild: “My God. If a daycare center served this to children here in Denmark, they would be fired and reported to the police”, “Are the children still alive?” or even “Is healthy food illegal in the US?. Frankly, we were not far from asking ourselves the question.
Whole jar of barbecue sauce, liter of oil and sweets for every meal…
This is the quintessential meal for American kids—if we’re to trust the videos their moms and daycare providers have posted on TikTok. Because @dailymealideas is not the only one who promotes, or at least wants to inspire, with this type of recipes. When we see that many of them clean their meat with washing-up liquid… we say to ourselves that there really is a cultural gap. Some are having fun in the comments: “You should try the yellow washing-up liquid instead, it has a touch of lemon that complements the spices perfectly.”.
The culture of packed lunch is very famous in the US, so we often see mothers – yes, it is still very often women who have this role – preparing boxes meals for their children. So far so good, the problem is that they often are composed only of crackers, industrial cheese, processed meats and sweets. Sometimes we see a few carrot sticks or a few strawberries lying around, but we are not even sure that these are not also processed…
“Those who live in Europe, what do you feed your children?”
Seeing the many reactions her post generated, the founder of the @dailymealideas account couldn’t help but respond in the video: “90% of the comments under my meatball video say I’m poisoning children. But what fascinates me are people from Poland or Germany or other countries commenting… Can you tell me what you feed your children?”.
The answers were far from his expectations: vegetables, fish, eggs, raw vegetables, sweet potatoes… In the end, nothing too fatty, nothing too sweet and nothing too processed. Simple, healthy and nutritious products, prepared at home. If we are told to eat at least five fruits and vegetables a day, it is not for nothing. And this applies even more to growing children.
