Toulouse: at the Victor-Hugo market, access to restaurants made more visible

One of the stairs leading to the restaurants at the Victor-Hugo market in Toulouse is being renovated to make the site more attractive.

The imposing scaffolding installed since the end of July on one side of the Victor-Hugo market has not escaped the regulars of the famous hall. A few years ago, in 2018 and 2019, the best known of Toulouse’s three covered markets benefited from a facelift as part of the complete renovation of the surroundings and the car park. There remained this part of the work which only started on July 28 with a view to completion on November 4. The aim is to make one of the stairs leading to the restaurants on the first floor, the north staircase, visible from the outside, thanks to a glass facade. And thus give the idea to tourists and passers-by who do not know the places the desire to go to the restaurants, explains Jean-Jacques Bolzan, deputy mayor in charge of the markets who always visits to make the site attractive.

During the duration of the works, a temporary staircase was installed. It leads customers to the restaurant terraces. The site, for which the town hall is the contracting authority and the architectural firm Taillandier the project manager, represents a cost of €250,550 for the community.

Night opening

At the start of the school year, Victor-Hugo will look again at the eternal question of the night opening. Before the Covid, there was generally a consensus among traders on this thorny subject. The town hall relaunched a questionnaire in the spring with a view to a report in September. This opening, which could take place on Thursday or Friday, “it must be done”, insists Jean-Jacques Bolzan.
