Who are the French who run on E85 superethanol?

With the almost continuous increase in fuel costs over the past year (diesel exceeded 1.5 euros per liter at the end of September-beginning of October last year), many motorists have been looking for cheaper alternatives.

An alternative while fuel prices remain high

Some have chosen to buy an electric vehicle, whose registrations represented more than 10% of sales in the first half of the year. Others, more, have chosen to convert their petrol car to superethanol or to buy a car.”flex-E85″ initially runs on this fuel. Witnessing this enthusiasm, sales of new vehicles on E85 exploded between January and June: + 1,419%!

A recent study published by the Collective of bioethanol makes it possible to better understand this distribution. Of the 3,000 respondents, two thirds chose to convert their vehicle and the other third chose to buy. These data are explained in particular by the fact that 90% of the car fleet is capable of running on biofuel and that several conversion aids have emerged over the past year, for example in Ile-de-France.

The study also confirms the completely new nature of the phenomenon: half of motorists who drive on E85 have changed fuel for less than a year. Among the reasons mentioned, we naturally find ourselves at the forefront the price of gasoline (at 74%), but also a ecological motivation (at 39%). Another crucial point: the densification of the network of gas stations that distribute E85. According to 8 out of 10 respondents, the nearest station is less than 10 kilometers from their home.

A fuel that primarily benefits active people and heavy riders

With regard to the sociological profile of the users, it seems quite homogeneous, although two age categories stand out in particular: 45-54 year olds and 55-64 year olds. Similarly, the proportion of employees is twice as represented as in the rest of the French population. More broadly, it turns out that 80% of bioethanol supporters are active, and that 66% use their car to get to work. The study concludes that this alternative fuel is therefore economically particularly profitable for heavy riders (43% of respondents drive between 600 and 1,500 kilometers per month).

On the invoice side, this study also makes it possible to quantify the savings that the switch to E85 represents. Three quarters of the surveyed users think so more than 600 euros per year their savings on their fuel budget. Because of this economy and the less polluting nature of this fuel, almost 50% of them now request the implementation of assistance to acquire a flex E85 vehicle (or a conversion box) that already exists for the electric vehicle.

According to figures from SNPAA (National Union of Agricultural Alcohol Producers), E85 would actually emit 50% less CO2 and 90% less fine particles than SP95, all with 100% French production. However, it is not certain that this will be enough to convince the public authorities, who have already made the choice to abandon hybrid motorization in light of the objectives to abandon the thermomobile in 2035.
