The largest work of contemporary art in the world will finally open to the public in the United States

This Friday, September 2, visitors will finally be able to discover “City”, a monumental work by artist Michael Heizer. Its construction began in 1970. It would be the largest work of contemporary art in the world with its XXL measurements: 2.4 km long and 1.6 km wide, reports The Art Newspaper in an article relayed by Geo.

It was erected in the “Basin and Range National Monument”, a protected site in the Nevada desert (United States).

A foundation to support the project

To build such a work, boulders had to be moved, concrete structures erected and large mounds of earth formed.

The artist was able to count on many supports, which enabled him to carry out his project. Initially, Michael Heizer had planned to finance this work himself, but many personalities and institutions in the art world joined him via the Triple Aught Foundation, created in 1998.

You will need to register to visit the site.

This structure must manage but also preserve the site for the next few years. Of course, 77-year-old Michael Heizer is on the board. An endowment, with initial funding of nearly 30 million euros, was also created to finance the work.

It will be necessary to register to admire this work. The number of visitors will be limited.
