As July 1 approaches, the premises of the Society for the Protection of Animals of Quebec are full. Many owners have abandoned their pets during this moving period.
The Director General of the Society for the Protection of Animals of Quebec (SPA), Karina Painchaud, noticed an increase in the number of abandonments. In fact, their numbers rose from 1,534 for the period from January to June last year to 1,559 this year.
June to 28June, we saw an increase. Last year we talked about 65forgiveness, while this week we are talking about 80abandonments, two of which were due to relocation”,”text”:”Even in the last week, from June 21 to June 28, we noticed an increase. Last year we talked about 65 closures, while this week we talked about 80 closures, including two due to a move
explained Karina Painchaud.
We perform miracles.
The Director General of SPA de Québec specifies, however, that if the number of decommissionings increased this year compared to last year, the number of decommissionings that occur due to the relocation of owners has decreased. In the same period, from January to June, their number fell from 139 to 93. According to her, one of the reasons for this situation is the fact that pet owners may have decided to stay in their homes rather than move.
Another explanation she hears from owners for leaving their animals behind is the lack of time to care for them, especially during the summer period, when there are many activities and leisure activities.
The Director General still hopes that the organization’s premises will be able to benefit from an extension to better meet the needs.

Responsible adoption
Mrs. Painchaud reminds us of the importance of seriously asking yourself before adopting an animal.
What is the profile of the home’s residents? What are our lifestyle habits? Are we sedentary? Are we active? Do we have small children? Are we pensioners? Do we telework? How are our summers?
provides an example of the kinds of questions you should ask yourself before adopting an animal.
The spokesman for the Association of Quebec Veterinary Doctors in small animal practice, Michel Pépin, is of the same opinion. He specifies that the animal will accompany its master for 10 or even 15 years.
We have been worried for some time.
Michel Pépin mentions that in the days after 1 July, traffic is higher at veterinary clinics.
Theoretically, there can be more euthanasia for a thousand and one reasons such as moving, the summer period, holidays or financial problems.
he explains, specifying that vets try not to euthanize healthy animals.
According to him, between 2% and 3% of livestock are insured in Quebec. He hopes to see this number increase in the coming years.
Insurance will save lives and prevent abandonment
he asserts.
This Sunday, the cost of adopting a cat is reduced by 50% at SPA Quebec. Cats are currently the most numerous on the organization’s premises.
