This tiramisu-like Asian pastry is the dessert of the summer

Asian countries are real little gems for discovering new flavors. There is no shortage of good addresses in Belgium. We recently talked about Nami, the first Japanese hand-rolling bar that recently arrived in Brussels, but also about a Thai dessert that could very well become the new obsession in our country. Recently, it’s another Asian dessert that’s got people talking, to the point of being named a summer trend according to the Pinterest platform.

Discover in pictures what we thought of Nami:

The mango float

This treat is called the mango float. It comes directly from the Philippines. It is generally prepared in a rectangular dish and consists of layers of Boudoir biscuits or speculoos, whipped cream, sweetened condensed milk and ripe, juicy mango. You have to alternate and superimpose the layers one after the other. When you’re done, you feel like you have a colorful tiramisu in front of you. Mango float is eaten cold, so it is strongly recommended to put it in the fridge when the recipe is finished, or in the freezer to enjoy it in an iced version with a more compact texture. If you don’t like mangoes, they can be replaced with strawberries, pineapples or cherries.

If Pinterest has placed the mango float among the top trends this summer, it is because of the explosion in the number of searches devoted to the dessert (+3,700%, a spectacular number). The mango season extends from May to September, so it is not surprising to see internet users interested in the various desserts based on this fruit, recognizable by its beautiful orange color. In addition to mango float, Pinterest saw an increase in searches for mango tapioca (+690%), pudding made from chia seeds and mango, but also mango sago, a typical Hong Kong dessert (+200% for both desserts).

The benefits of mangoes

Apart from being a summer fruit, mango has many benefits. A study published in July 2023 presented at the annual conference of the American Society for Nutrition confirmed this. Mee Young Hong, principal investigator of the study and a professor in the College of Health and Human Services at San Diego State University, said: “Mango contributes a variety of nutrients, phytochemicals and bioactive compounds to the diet, including 50% of the daily value (DV) for vitamin C, 15% of the DV for folate and 15% of the DV for copper. Mango is also a predominant source of mangiferin, a bioactive compound“.

The skin of the mango also plays an important role in health. A 2010 study published in the journal Science Direct found that it may play a role in preventing obesity, thanks to the phytochemicals found in it. Mango also proves to be an ally for our eyes. It contains lutein and zeaxanthin, two carotenoids that play an important role in the retina of the eye, protecting it from sunlight and blue light from screens.
