Monday, August 19, employees of Thionville SPA (Moselle) had an unpleasant surprise: a cardboard box with room for ten kittens was placed in front of the shelter gate during closing hours, between 18.00 and 19.30.
“Luckily a member of staff came back that way to check or the poor little ones would have died [le lendemain] cold or worse,” says Thionville SPA on social networks.
Kittens discovered in the middle of the forest by hikers
A few hours before this discovery, people had come to the Thionville SPA with this box full of kittens, according to Jennifer Megna, manager of the shelter. People were invited to get in touch with their city to find out the designated pound.
“We thought they would do things correctly,” says Ms Megana. But while walking in the forestan elderly couple found the box with the kittens. The latter was finally dropped off in front of the shelter.
At the time, Mrs. Megna admits that it annoys them a lot, because it was the kittens left to themselves and would have had little chance of survival until the shelter opens the next day. Since they are located in the middle of fields and forest, these animals could have been prey for foxes or even martens.
Families temporarily took the kittens in
When they were cared for by Thionville SPA, the kittens had a “big runny nose”says Mrs. Megana. After an hour of cleaning the eyes, the kittens were temporarily taken in by shelter staff.
The latter threw a bottle into the sea to find “quickly two relay families to welcome five kittens each for a period of approximately two months”, we can read on social networks.
“We managed to find it four relay families to share the kittens,” reports Ms. Megna, who also claims to have had good news about animal health.

Within a week, the Thionville SPA team discovered the box full of kittens, but also two cats that were let out in front of the shelter on Saturday 24 August afternoon, then a cat found in its transport box in front of the gate, this Monday, August 26, in the morning. It was deposited “between 07:00 and 07:45”, according to the SPA.
It is depressing to see these animals languishing abandoned, left to fend for themselves, in total stress. We are not here to judge anyone. In an emergency, we always try to push the walls. Leaving an animal like that, with all the prevention that the SPA does, should no longer happen in 2024.
“It’s a disaster”: there are still so many abandonments
Just like the previous summer period, the summer of 2024 is unfortunately characterized by animal abandonment: “It is a disasterworse than the previous year,” sighs Mrs. Megana.
At the Thionville shelter, about fifteen abandoned dogs have been taken in over the past month, and forty are on a waiting list. Fortunately, owners have chosen to see a dog trainer on the advice of the SPA instead of giving up their animals.
For cats wait about thirty. There are also about fifteen new pets (rodents, birds, etc.) on the waiting list.
