controversy after the call of the United States to the Transitional Military Council

In Chad, the Charge d’Affaires of the United States Embassy Ellen Thorburn called on Friday July 1 the Transitional Military Council – the military junta that has taken power since the death of President Idriss Deby Itno in April 2021 – to honor the promise that its members will not run in post-transition elections and that it should be as short as possible. The late president’s party criticized comments that amounted to interference.

Among the most virulent critics of such remarks is the Patriotic Movement party which denounced, on the night of Sunday to Monday, July 4, unacceptable interference on the part of the United States, which in turn earned it criticism. of the opposition.

Thus, at the MPS, the party of the late President Idriss Deby Itno, we do not take off. Because the latter chose the American Independence Day to also criticize the substance of Washington’s message: the American diplomat having recalled the promise of the Transitional Military Council (TMC) that none of its members will apply for the post-transition elections.

However, for the MPS, this is a question that will be decided during the inclusive national dialogue, warns its spokesperson, Jean-Bernard Padaré: “ I think things are clear. Let the Chadian people who are about to go to this dialogue be left to discuss and decide on matters of national interest. We cannot accept with dignity that subjects of national interest be raised on the occasion of the independence day of a friendly country, unless Chad is still under trusteeship… »

In the opposition, they say they are not surprised to see the MPS ” to roll for the military junta, led by the son of former President Idriss Deby.

Max Kemkoye, president of the opposition UDP party, recalls that it is a power resulting from a coup d’etat and considers that the American diplomat was well in her role: ” It is absolutely not a question of talking about interference in the internal affairs of a State. It was a reminder to the CMT vis-à-vis their promises in front of the ambassadors’ floors. Today, democracy is one of the values universally defended and, consequently, the Chargé d’Affaires is in her role “. Max Kemkoye concludes that ” the CMT must be neutral, before bowing out, after the next elections “.
