To term, the risk is a lack of interest in growing vegetables. José Renard, from the Walloon Federation of Agriculture, confirms this concern: “We are in a situation of general cost increases. If the processors do not incorporate this general increase by paying the farmers a little more, we could have people who say that at this price, rather than drooling, do not sign a contract. And so there, the companies would be deprived of the volume of raw materials necessary”.
In Flanders, the number of areas cultivated for vegetables has already decreased in favor of cereals, the selling price of which is exploding. This is problematic for Belgium, the European export leader. Each year, 1 billion tons of frozen vegetables leave the country.
