New battle, new weapons. Sentenced, last June, to pay $ 10 million in damages to her ex-husband Johnny Depp, as part of the defamation lawsuit between them, Amber Heard had formalized her request for appeal, Thursday, July 21. Spokespersons for the actress announced on Tuesday, August 16 that she had reshuffled her team and hired new lawyers.

A representative of the heroine ofAquaman announced in the american press she had retained as counsel Me David L. Axelrod and Me Jay Ward Brown. The Ballard Spahr law firm duo are known for having brilliantly defended the New York Times while Sarah Palin sued the daily for defamation. Ben Rottenborn, who represented the actress during the six-week trial in Virginia, will remain co-counsel, while Elaine Charlson Bredehoft will step down. The ubiquitous lawyer during the first legal battle clarified that the call is “the perfect time to hand over”. “I have promised Amber and her call team my full cooperation and assistance as they move forward on the path to success,” she said.

“New Evidence”

“A different court warrants a different representation, especially since so much new evidence is now coming to light,” the actress’ attorneys simply added in a statement.

“We welcome the opportunity to represent Ms. Heard in this appeal, as this is a case that has significant First Amendment implications for all Americans,” Axelrod and Brown said in a joint statement. “We are confident that the Court of Appeal will properly apply the law without deference to popularity, overturn the judgment against Ms Heard and reaffirm fundamental principles of free speech.”

The actor of Pirates of the Caribbean quickly retorted, deciding to file an appeal too. According to information from Deadline, the actor’s lawyers filed an appeal on Friday, July 22, in Fairfax County, where the trial took place. “Plaintiff and Counterclaim Defendant John C. Depp, II, by Counsel, hereby appeals to the Virginia Court of Appeals from all adverse judgments and from the Order of Final Judgment of this Circuit Court rendered on June 24, 2022”, can we read on the official documents reported by the site.

All these twists did not prevent Johnny Depp from developing his projects. Concert at the Olympia, filming at Versailles… and the latest: going back behind the camera by making a biopic on the painter Modigliani.
