On Day 1 of the 19th edition of the FIBA AmeriCup, Mexico made history by beating USA, 73-67.
The victory is Mexico’s first ever against the United States at the AmeriCup. The Mexicans made a difference in the third quarter (20-13) to take a lead (56-48) which the Americans erased via a 10-2. But after a tie at 58, Mexico took control to race to victory.
Point guard Paul Stoll (1.80m, 36), passed without splinters by Limoges and Boulogne-Levallois, was Mexico’s hero with 15 points, 5 rebounds, 9 assists and 4 steals, while Fabian Jaimes recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Mexico scored 44 points in the paint with Jaimes and Daniel Amigo (13 points).
USA struggled to knock down three-point shots, going a modest 8/30. Their two leaders were Jeremy Pargo (14 points) and Norris Cole (11 points), ex-Monaco and Limoges, the only two players to score in double figures for the United States.
“I want to congratulate my players. They did a great job. They followed the game plan to perfection tonight. We are very happy, we will enjoy this victory against the world number one,” commented Omar Quintero, Mexico coach.
