Anti-abortion decision in the United States: global solidarity is organized on TikTok and in large companies

“If we fall, we fall together”. Under this “slogan” are the translated lyrics of a song by The Chainsmokers titled “Paris”. But above all, a surge of global solidarity, to help American women who need to have an abortion, since the decision of the Supreme Court to abolish this right.

Since this global thunderclap, countless videos have gone viral, on social networks and especially TikTok. They depict women, often young, living in places where abortion is authorized and offering their hospitality to American women in need.

Hospitality, pregnancy tests, jobs…

Here, Laurel, an American, offers a weekend on the farm. “To my best American friends: I live 20 minutes from the Michigan border. If you want to ‘come see my cows’ for the weekend, let me know”she says in a video.

Another offers to help, in Florida “where camping is legal”. “If you need to recover and rest after camping, I’m here”, she says. A young woman indicates that she lives a few kilometers from the American border, in Niagara Falls and suggests a short walk “oenological”and a few days later, to rest.

But the solidarity does not stop at psychological and material support alone: other young women offer their own negative pregnancy tests, if by chance, some women would need them to leave the state in which they live to go have an abortion in another state.

A doctor living in Texas but working in a state where abortion is permitted, offers to “convey” women who need it. In the same vein, doctors other than gynecologists offer their services to help their fellow gynecologists. And the solidarity extends beyond American borders. In Europe too, some women have offered to help. In Greece, Anastasia offers to “camp” at her place.

Coded messages to protect women and support by companies

Camping, wine tasting, weekend at the farm… So many code names to avoid pronouncing the reason why, they will be welcomed and tell women in distress that they will find shelter if they have it. needed during their abortion. It is also a question of protecting those who would do research on social networks and who would not want to do research including the words abortion or abortion.

Another protective measure is the commitment of certain multinationals, such as Apple, Disney and Netflix. Thus, Netflix provides aid of several thousand dollars to its employees who need to go to a clinic practicing abortion. Warner Bros has announced that it will expand health care to medical care relating to “reproductive rights”. Same logic at Condé Nast, where the company said it would reimburse travel and accommodation costs for employees who need abortion, infertility or gender reaffirmation services and cannot obtain them locally. .

Same thing at Nike. The company said in a statement that it covers travel and accommodation costs in situations where health services are not available close to home. “No matter where our teammates are on their family planning journey – from birth control and abortion coverage, to pregnancy support and family building, to fertility benefits, maternity substitution and adoption – we are here to support their decisions”indicates the press release, taken up by CNN.

According to a poll published Sunday by CBS, a majority of Americans disapprove of the Supreme Court’s decision: 59% of those polled and 67% of women oppose it. In addition, 52% of those polled thought it was a setback for the United States, while 31% thought it was progress.
