It is one door which we should not hesitate to do push since the Côte Fleurie refuge is a reference in terms of animal welfare. Comfort and cleanliness ensure for dogs and cats the best possible living conditions. In Touques (Calvados) the residents are spoiled by a caring team who would like to see most of them go anyway.
In fact, all the crates are occupied by dogs abandoned by their families. An unthinkable and increasingly frequent act. We face two types of abandonment. Some people call us to inform us of their intention to get rid of their dog, and depending on the space available, we agree to take it or not. If the shelter is full as it is at the moment, the animal is put on a waiting list before a box becomes available.
The crisis center also has another calling pound and collects the dogs hike or entered by justice : “We also receive badly treated dogs who live confined or in deplorable conditions. Priority is given to this type of emergency, which comes before abandonment. » Most often these are animal which live in their excrement, malnourishedor even victims of abuse passive, i.e. left alone all day.
You are his whole life
There is one in particular on the waiting list Australian Shepherda very fashionable breed in recent years. “This one is two years old,” Morgane says. The parents took it for the children. They did not understand that this breed is very dynamic, very athletic and cannot be left alone for 10 hours a day. You have to move with the dog, offer him activities. If his owners leave him cooped up all day, he can become their worst nightmare. »
The French craze for this dog breed should not make them forget that the Australian shepherd is above all a working dog. In front ignorance of the peculiarities of the companions they have chosen, many Masters prefer to part with them: “Generally after two years” confides Morgane. But there are also those who, after 10 years of living together, no longer want to support an aging animal, sometimes incontinent, or to take on often expensive care which he needs.
This is why shelter staff, like veterinarians, stress the importance of learning about the breed before adopting a dog.
And never forget that if your animal only follows you for part of your life, you are their whole life.
Raya, 3 years old in a box…and never any petting
Rayaa female malinois of only 4 years recently joined the home of Leslie in Blonville-sur-Mer. “I’ve always lived with dogs,” confides the young woman, “so has my husband. We already had a little 8-year-old bulldog. “Leslie decides to adopt anyway another dog which she will seek from a shelter. “I’ve wanted to adopt a dog for a long time. I missed it terribly. I went to Green bush and I saw Raya. She met all my criteria in that she would have no problem getting along with our dog, our cat and our 10 year old child. » If the choice for Leslie is made at first glance, the adoption plan must however be validated by the shelter. “Maya was very scared, remembers her mistress. “Since birth, the young dog had only known the box. No contact with the outside world.
No human had really approached her. Until she arrived at the shelter, she didn’t know what a hug was.
Raya was part of a seizure with 74 other dogsall in a pitiable state. It took Leslie two weeks to approach him and restore his trust before he got approval from the shelter to take him home.
The first days were difficult. Raya was a little lost. It is followed by a pedagogue to facilitate adjustment to this new life. “She understands, she’s a ball of love” smiles her mistress.
