The soap opera is shorter than for the Australian Open, but the purpose is the same. Novak Djokovic will not be able to participate in the US Open, which begins on Monday. He announced it himself on Twitter, Thursday August 25, saying that he is unable to “[s]to go to New York”.

“Unfortunately I will not be able to make it to New York for this US Open. Thank you for your messages of love and support. Good luck to my fellow players! I will stay in shape and keep a positive spirit”said the Serbian tennis player.

The current 6th player in the world had already been unable to take part in the Australian Open in January, for lack of a vaccine against Covid-19. Any traveler wishing to set foot in the United States must present a complete vaccination schedule.

“Novak is a great champion, it’s a shame that he can’t participate in the US Open 2022. We hope to see him again in 2023”tournament director Stacey Allaster said in a statement.

This expected package is part of a particularly difficult year 2022 for the Serb. His only Grand Slam success came at Wimbledon, where no points were awarded by the ATP.

The announcement opens up the table a little more, as the draw takes place on Thursday. Daniil Medvedev, defending champion and world number 1, remains the natural favorite. Alexander Zverev forfeits and Rafael Nadal in uncertain form, it is not incongruous to imagine a new Grand Slam winner. Stéfanos Tsitsipas, Pablo Carreno Busta or Nick Kyrgios could join the fight. Unless the ghost Borna Coric continues its momentum?
