What happens if you keep your insurance sticker on your windscreen even though it is no longer mandatory since April 1st?

What does the law say about this?

If you are a seasoned driver, you are aware this news. The insurance sticker is no more MANDATORY on the windshield. An effective measure since April 1st.
From now on, the police will be able to consult VAT, or the file of insured vehicles. In this large file it will be easy to know if your car is insured or not. After all, many drivers hesitate to remove the famous vignette. For what ? Because the habit of the years is still very present.
However, you can be reassured: Nothing is stated in the law regarding the insurance sticker. You can therefore remove it without any fear. But the opposite is also true. It is entirely possible to keep your sticker without fear a fine or a withdrawal of points.
On the other hand, be careful preserve the insurance note you receive after each renewal of your contract. The police will thus have access to a lot of information regarding your insurance.

A historic change!

This is a measure that originates from September 2022. Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire announced this at the time 2023. It was necessary to wait 1 April 2024 to see the end of the insurance sticker on the windshield.
Until then it was mandatory to have the famous green butterfly and this since 1986. On the latter we found elements such as: the name of your insurance company, the number of your contract or the dates of beginning and off END the validity of your insurance.
Because as a reminder, it is forbidden to drive a car that is not insured by third party insurance. Punishment are heavy on those who do not respect the rules. The label has therefore been replaced by FVA, file on insured vehicles.
This large file is not new as it exists since 2019. FVA is financed directly by insurance companies. They actually have the obligation to provide the important information in your contract within a period of 72 hours.

Now, during a stop, the police officer will enter the license plate number and can check your status.
