A cat found curled up in leaves overnight came to a kind person who called out to her and changed her life forever.

About two weeks ago, rescuers at Greenpoint Cats received a text about a cat found nestled among the foliage in a park.
They rushed to the spot and were told by others that the cat had been there since the previous day. “The shivering cat had made a little nest in the leaves to try to keep warm,” Greenpoint Cats said.
When a rescuer called out to the tabby, she woke up and started meowing in response.

The moment the rescuer held out his hand, she stood up and hobbled off.
Eager for help, the friendly cat allowed the rescuer to pick her up and place her in a carrier. She was then taken to the vet where she was assessed to be 11 years old. “We named her Karen for McCarren Park (where she was found).”

They found a microchip and when they contacted the owner, they learned the cat had been “abandoned in the park”.
Karen quickly settled into her nursing home, where she had plenty of food to help her recover from low blood sugar. With a cozy room and a comfortable bed, she could finally decompress. “It must have been a terrifying two days out in the cold.”

A few hours after they had brought her inside, freezing rain began to fall. Now Karen was warm with her foster family and slept in her new bed on a full stomach instead of trying to keep warm in the leaves outside.
She rolled over on her back and purred loudly as she got her chin scratched. The sadness on her face melted away, replaced by contentment.

After enduring the cold and hunger, the cute tabby was happy to be indoors. “For two days and nights she survived in sub-freezing temperatures by building a nest in a pile of leaves.”
“And yet her spirit is unbroken and her love unconditional.”

Since rescuing Karen, Greenpoint Cats volunteers have also rescued three more abandoned cats from the neighborhood.
The cute tabby regained his strength and curiosity, explored the house and inspected the Christmas tree. With renewed energy, she started playing, carrying around her toys and enjoying being an indoor cat again.

Karen rediscovered her playful spirit and love of hugs. After playtime, she enjoyed herself with her foster mother and purred contentedly. When she was up for adoption, they hoped to find her a loving family who would cherish her forever.
On New Year’s Eve, the rescue received the exciting news they had been waiting for.

Karen had a meet-and-greet with a lovely family and quickly won them over with her charm. She climbed into their laps and then onto their chests as if to declare, “You have been chosen.”
Soon after, the rescue received a heartfelt message from the family gushing over the sweet tabby.
