Charfeddine and Fekih order the slaughter

On the orders of the Minister of the Interior, Taoufik Charfeddine, the Governor of Tunis, Kamel Fekih, brought together, Thursday, July 21, 2022, the mayors of the various municipalities of Greater Tunis to order a large-scale dog slaughter campaign pending building shelters.

In a statement published on the Facebook page of the governorate of Tunis, it was specified that these campaigns would be carried out in accordance with a plan that the regional unit of the municipal police would put in place. The objective is to stem the phenomenon of stray dogs in order to protect citizens and tourists and preserve “the aesthetics of the Capital”, while the streets are flooded with garbage.

To do this, the municipalities will have to call on hunters, according to the press release from the governorate of Tunis, to carry out the slaughter while waiting for refuges to be set up. The various municipalities have, moreover, been called upon to work on the development of reception, sterilization and vaccination areas for stray dogs.

Campaigns of anarchic slaughter carried out by the agents of the municipalities are organized periodically. Only the municipality of La Marsa has a municipal shelter for stray dogs. The project launched since 2018 could not be materialized until four years later in February 2022 thanks to the joint efforts of the municipalities of La Marsa, Carthage and Sidi Bou Saïd as well as the teams of the Pasteur Institute of Tunis and members of civil society.
