Kenyan sport is in mourning. This Sunday August 28, the Team Amani formation announced the death of its rider Suleiman Kangangi. The 33-year-old cyclist was taking part in the Vermont Overland in the United States, a gravel race. The man died of his injuries after suffering a heavy crash at high speed on Saturday. In Europe, the Kenyan was best known for being a member of the German Bike Aid team between 2017 and 2020.
“Sule Kangangi tragically lost his life yesterday after crashing at high speed during a race in Vermont“said Team Amani on Instagram.”Sule is our captain, our friend, our brother. He is also a father, a husband and a son. Gaping holes are left when giants fall. Sule was a giant. Instead of leading us to the front of the pack, he will now guide us as a North Star, as we move forward in achieving his dream. Pumzika kwa amani Sule, you will always be with us.“
Through a statement, Ansel Dickey, the Vermont Overland organizer, also paid tribute to Suleiman Kankangi: “The Vermont Overland is completely heartbroken. We send our deepest condolences to his family, friends, the Amani team and the people of Kenya.“
