Dion Leonard, an experienced Ultramarathon runner, had competed in some of the most difficult endurance races across the globe. His journey as a runner took him to places where only the strongest could endure. In June 2016, Dion participated in Gobi March, a 155 km (250 kilometers) ran through the harsh, unforgivable terrain in the Gobi Desert in China. The race was demanding, stretched over sand dunes, mountains and remote villages where temperatures could hover during the day and fall at night.
It was during this race that Dion’s path crossed with an unlikely companion – a small stray dog that would later become known as Gobi. The other day of the race as Dion ran through the big desert landscape, he noticed that a small dog had started running with him. The little dog with sandy coat mixed with the desert, kept up with the experienced runner, apparently unaffected by the heat and harsh conditions.
At first, Dion assumed the dog would eventually fall backwards or wander away, as straying animals sometimes do. But to his surprise, the dog continued to run with him for Miles and never played on his part. Despite her small size, Gobi showed remarkable stamina and followed Dion as they crossed the harsh terrain in the Gobi desert. She didn’t just run – she got close, as if he were determined to stick to Dion, regardless of the challenges.
For Dion, this was not a regular meeting. As the race continued, he couldn’t help but notice Gobi’s loyalty and resilience. She didn’t have to run with him, and yet she chose it. It became clear that Gobi had decided that Dion was her person and she would not leave her side. “It was just a decision she would make,” Dion remembered later. “She would be next to me.”
The bond between Dion and Gobi got stronger with each passed kilometer. At night, while other competitors rested in their tents, Gobi would follow Dion into his tent and sleep by his side. In these moments, Dion realized that this little dog had become more than just a stray race with him – she had become his companion. He made the decision to look after her and provided her with food and water from his own limited supply despite the risk of his own performance in the race.
Carrying extra weight and sharing its rations was not an easy choice, especially during such an intense breed. But for Dion, Gobi was worth it. He would even carry her over rivers as the water was too deep for her small frame to cross on her own. “I saw a lot of courage and resilience in her,” Dion shared, reflecting on how much Gobi had touched his heart. Her determination reminded him of his own difficult childhood and the obstacles he had overcome. Gobi’s spirit mirrored his own, and their connection became something much deeper than Dion had expected when he first went out on this race.
As the race was approaching its end, Dion knew it was not an opportunity to leave Gobi. He had found up – he would find a way to bring her home to Edinburgh, Scotland, where he lived with his wife. When Dion called his wife to tell her about Gobi, she immediately supported his decision to bring the dog home. She couldn’t wait to meet the dog who had made such an impression on Dion.
However, the process of bringing Gobi to Scotland would prove to be more complicated than Dion had hoped. After the race, Gobi was to be quarantined, which was a necessary step before she could be transported internationally. A friendly volunteer in China offered to nurture Gobi while Dion returned to Edinburgh to sort the paperwork and logistics for her journey. Everything seemed to go according to plan until the unexpected happened – Gobi disappeared.
When Dion received the news that Gobi had disappeared, he was destroyed. The idea of losing the dog that had shown such loyalty during the race was unbearable. Dion was determined to find her, immediately aboard a plane and flew back to China. When he arrived, he launched a full -scale search to find Gobi. Dion’s search efforts became a social effort as local volunteers, runners and even the media joined to help.
Dion spent days tirelessly searching, setting up posters and talking to the locals in the hope of finding his lost friend. His journey to reunite with Gobi was full of uncertainty, but Dion refused to give up. He even documented his search, shared updates and gathered support from people who had heard of their history. After days of merciless search, Dion’s efforts paid off. He received a call with the news he had hoped for – Gobi was found.
The moment of their reunion was nothing short of magic. Gobi immediately recognized Dion and ran straight into his arms. The tape between them had never been broken and their joy of being reunited was clear. Gobi had been through a lot, but her loyalty and love for Dion had remained strong throughout the trial.
With Gobi surely back by his side, the Dion resumed the process of bringing her home to Scotland. It took five long months of waiting and preparation, but eventually Gobi’s journey was completed. After a 48-hour flight, she arrived in Scotland, where she was welcomed with open arms by Dion and his wife.
A fraudulent veterinary action leads to heartbreaking loss
He was going on as a veterinarian. It is not a surprise to learn that at least one dog has already been confirmed dead as a result of his false veterinary work. On top of that, he kept several dogs locked wrong without food or water.
Today, Gobi lives a happy life in his forever home, surrounded by love and care. She went from being a stray dog in the hard Gobi desert to a beloved member of Dion’s family. Their story is more than just a story of a man who met a dog – it is a testimony to the power of resilience, loyalty and the incredible bond that can be formed between humans and animals.
Dion and Gobi’s journey together is a reminder that sometimes the most unexpected meetings can lead to life -changing friendships. What started as a random encounter in one of the world’s most unforgivable landscapes flourished in a beautiful relationship that neither Dion nor Gobi could have ever predicted. Their story is proof that the ties we share with animals can transcend even the toughest circumstances, which brings joy, love and camaraderie when we least expect it.
