The Peruvian lowland jungle is full of beauty, wonder and surprises. For Polar, a Terrier mix with striking white fur, the jungle is a unique and unexpected experience. Exploring the lush lowlands of Madre de Dios with his family – including his brown-furred canine sibling, Calvin – Polar is often the center of attention. However, it is not the locals or other hikers who are fascinated by him; it is the monarch butterflies that turn his peaceful walks into a playful spectacle.
Whenever Polar ventures into the jungle, the monarch butterflies, attracted to his snow-white coat, swarm around him in a colorful dance. They flutter excitedly when they spot him through the trees, landing neatly on his back and neck. The orange and black of their wings stand out against his fur, turning him into a living canvas for a few moments. While their perches are short-lived because Polar quickly shakes them off, it doesn’t take long for the butterflies to return and repeat the cycle throughout his trip.
TikTok user Abychan12 documented this charming phenomenon in several videos, which quickly sparked curiosity among viewers. One user, @karlysol3 (Karly Sol), offered a possible explanation for the butterflies’ behavior: “Butterflies sit on white surfaces. If you ever go to see monarch butterflies in Michoacán, [Mexico]wear white and you’ll see.” Abichan highlighted the comment, agreed with the theory, and gave Calvin as proof. Unlike Polar, Calvin, with his brown fur, remains completely unbothered by the butterflies.
Out of their wandering group, Polar remains the only recipient of the butterflies’ affection. Although he doesn’t enjoy being covered by his fluttering friends, his unique connection to the monarchs has earned him a light-hearted title: “Polar, Guardian of the Butterflies,” as Abichan fondly wrote.
Although Polar may not fully appreciate his special bond with the monarch butterflies, his jungle adventure has turned into something truly magical. Each trip is a reminder of how nature, in its own gentle way, finds beauty and coherence in the most unexpected places.

While Karly Sol’s theory may be correct, do you think there could be another explanation for why the butterflies are so fond of Polar? Maybe their connection isn’t about his white fur, but something else entirely. We’d love to hear your thoughts in our comments section.
