Who’s after the dogs in Dunkirk (North) ? This is the big question that Iris Veterinary Office, rue des Poilus (you can’t make that up). He recently received 3 dogs presenting symptoms as violent as they are sudden, and who finally died.
Their common points: they were all healthy before their condition suddenly worsens, and all walked in the same areanamely Grand Pavois, near the seawall and seafront.
In Dunkirk, young dogs died suddenly after vomiting and loss of energy
In addition, the dogs that were received urgently had also gone for a walk on the beach. That’s what pushed the veterinary team to communicate about these unexplained deaths on Facebook on July 13.
“We wanted to warn as many people as possible,” sums up Camille, veterinary assistant at the Iris office. There are owners of animals followed here, but also all the others who do not necessarily take their dogs to the vet. The idea is to create awareness. “Especially at a time when the seaside resort is full of holidaymakers…
Within 15 days, the three dogs – one of which belonged to Belgian tourists – died within 2 to 3 days. If they had no health problems before, they suddenly started vomiting and is become apathetic (loss of energy). “It was blinding. This affected young dogs aged 3 to 7 years and of all sizes,” continues Camille, employee.
Accidental Poisoning or Genuine Malice?
According to word of mouth, other dogs in the area have died under similar circumstances. It goes without saying that the most serious hypothesis, and one favored by Iris’ veterinary team, is poisoning. Not necessarily voluntarily, according to Camille.
“It could be poisoned food intended for seagulls and seagulls…”, pesky birds on the coast, yet protected – as well as their eggs – by Dunkirk Town Hall. And the less watered-down scenario, as likely as would like that a resident deliberately acts to harm dogs. Because poisonings so far have only caused canine casualties in the Iris office.
The best thing, it is finally recommended, is to be careful with anything that dogs can ingest, whether you are a resident or just passing through what we call the city of Jean Bart.
