A 22-year-old Afghan, committed to Islamic State ideology according to anti-terror prosecutors, was arrested in Haute-Garonne and charged on Saturday in Paris. He was suspected of “fostering” a “plan of violent action” at a football stadium or shopping mall. According to the authorities, his arrest has “connections” with the arrest of an Afghan resident in the United States, accused of planning an attack on the day of the American election.

The arrest of the young Afghan and his charge on Saturday in Paris on suspicion of “violent action” have “connections” with the arrest of an Afghan living in the United States and charged with planning an attack on the day of the American election, according to the National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office (Pnat), confirms a source close to the case, interviewed by AFP.

On Wednesday, a 27-year-old Afghan living in Oklahoma (south) was charged with planning an election day attack on behalf of the Islamic State (IS). He was in contact via Telegram messages with a person the FBI identified as an IS recruiter, according to US law enforcement.

According to the source close to the case, during their investigations, the US authorities passed on information to the French authorities, which triggered the opening of an investigation in Paris and led to three arrests.

From the Tajik community

In accordance with Pnat’s requisitions, he was charged with terrorist conspiracy by an investigating judge, then remanded in custody by a liberties and detention judge, assisted by an interpreter, who ruled behind closed doors.

The public prosecutor asked that the hearing not be public “to preserve the presumption of innocence” and allow “a calm start to the investigation”.

According to a source close to the matter, this young man comes from the Tajik community in Afghanistan, and his project, which he talked about on Telegram, remained rather vague and incomplete. According to another source close to the investigation, he has lived in France for about three years.
