A vegetation fire spread in the shelter of the association Free Chatsat Villeneuve-les-Beziersat the eastern gates of Béziers, this Friday evening: cats and dogs are dead, trapped in their boxes.
“The number of deceased animals, mainly cats is currently unknown, a count is in progress”, according to the Sdis 34which indicates that ten paddocks completely burnt downas well as a shed and 3,500m2 of tall brush, chemin des Rompudes, in the plain of Villeneuve-lès-Béziers.
When the first engines of firefighters from the barracks of Biterrois arrived at the beginning of the evening, the flames had already reached a wing of the refuge, ten boxes in total were ablaze. Cats and dogs were trapped. They died.
The firefighters were able to prevent the spread to other enclosures and to the association building. Volunteers on site managed to evacuate animals. There are about 200 cats left to shelter. A solidarity appeal is launched to other kennels in the department. The mayor of the town, the municipal police and police officers from the Béziers police station are on site, as well as the president of the association, traumatized. An investigation is open to determine the origin of this fire.
