Our analysis

16 ice cream sandwich choices were the subject of our analysis.

The serving size of 1 to 2 sandwiches (90 to 150 ml) was used to compare the products. The portion of 2 sandwiches was used for products with a “mini” format on their packaging. Each serving provides:

• Between 120 and 240 calories

• Between 4 and 10 g of lipids, including between 2 and 6 g of saturated fat

• Between 16 and 40 g of carbohydrates

• Between 4 and 21 g of sugars

• Between 2 and 3 g of protein

• Between 20 and 270 mg of sodium

The best choices

Ice cream sandwich/macaroon, vanilla flavor, La Crémeuse d’Irresistible are among the best choices. They are among the sandwiches least rich in lipids (5g), saturated fat (2g) and sugars (13g) on ​​the test bench. The ingredient list contains various additives (eg: modified milk ingredients, several gums, polysorbate 80, polyglycerol esters of fatty acids), but like all the products evaluated.

Ice cream sandwich, Neapolitan flavor, Chapman’s is also a good option. They are among the sandwiches least rich in lipids (4.5 g), saturated fat (2.5 g) and sugars (13 g). Like all analyzed products, the ingredient list contains additives (eg: modified milk substances, mono- and diglycerides, several gums), but also palm oil.

Ice cream sandwich, vanilla flavor, Nameless. These sandwiches are among the least rich in lipids (5 g) and sugars (13 g). They also contain less saturated fat (3g) than average. The additives on the ingredient list are similar to those found in other products (eg, modified milk solids, mono- and diglycerides, multiple gums). The ingredients also contain palm oil.

Although these sandwiches have a beneficial nutritional value, the presence of sweeteners in the ingredient list does not allow them to rank among the best choices. In fact, these sandwiches are the least rich in sugar (4 g) in the test bench, and they contain slightly less lipids (6 g) and saturated fat (3.5 g) than the average of the evaluated products. But in addition to additives (e.g. modified milk substances, mono- and diglycerides, various gums), the ingredient list also contains several sweeteners (maltitol syrup, sucralose, sorbitol and isomalt). A 120 ml sandwich contains 9 mg of sucralose and 11 g of polyalcohols. Consumption of more than 10 g of sugar alcohols per day may cause adverse gastrointestinal effects (eg flatulence, bloating, diarrhoea, abdominal pain).

The worst choices

Ice cream sandwich, strawberry flavor and vanilla flavor, from Chagnon Dairy are among the worst choices. They are the richest in lipids (10 g) and saturated fat (6 g) and among the richest in sugars (21 g). Chocolate sandwiches from the same brand are slightly less rich in lipids (7g) and saturated fat (4.5g), but contain a similar amount of sugar (20g). The ingredient lists contain additives similar to those found in other products (eg: mono- and diglycerides, various gums, carboxymethyl cellulose, polysorbate 80). The ingredients also include palm oil.

Among the less good choices are also the Chips Ahoy sandwiches with chocolate chips. of Christie. They are among the richest in lipids (8 g) and contain more saturated fat (4.5 g) and sugars (19 g) than the average of the analyzed products. In addition, the list of ingredients is very long and contains numerous additives (eg: modified milk ingredients, diammonium phosphate, colors, artificial flavors, mono- and diglycerides, propylene glycol monostearate, various gums). The ingredient list also contains palm oil.

Original Yukon French vanilla ice cream sandwich Chapman’s complement the less good options. These sandwiches are among the richest in lipids (8 g) and saturated fat (5 g). They also contain more sugar (17g) than average. The list of ingredients corresponds to the list of the other analyzed products in terms of additives (eg: modified milk substances, mono- and diglycerides, various gums) and contains palm oil.
