“It is not normal for adult dogs and cats to chase their own tails”, recalls Jessica Zoccoli, a veterinarian in Île-de-France. She has been interviewed by our colleagues at Géo and explains why this behavior should raise alarm.
Because that is very often the reason inflammation of the anal glands. Located on either side of the anus, these glands contain fluid and can become inflamed. “The pain looks like a hemorrhoid and it is very uncomfortable for the animal”explains Jessica Zoccoli.
The professional adds that this behavior in cats or dogs can also have a psychological origin. “Repetitive, unwarranted and somewhat obsessive behavior can be compared to OCD in humans”says the vet.
What should you do in case of health problems?
Finally, less seriously, the animal can also simply have fleas. These are very often located at the base of the tail, in the lower back. Regardless of the cause of the problem, It is therefore best to consult.
